Frequently Asked Questions

“Wait, you said training, that sounds like it’s going to take a lot of time.”

Nope, you’ll be done in less than an hour and ready to complete your first energy assessment.

“But I don’t know anything about energy efficiency.”

That’s where we come in. We’ll give you all the training, tools, and support you’ll need.

“I’m not sure I’m comfortable talking to any businesses.”

Don’t worry. Most businesses are eager to receive an energy assessment from a GIC volunteer. And we’ll prepare you so you can be confident when talking with them.

“I don’t know any business owners and not sure where I’d go.”

That’s great! Volunteers report that they have the most success at businesses where they’re a frequent customer or have a friend that works there. No need to know the owner or manager beforehand.

The Power of Experiential Learning

Get out of the classroom and learn by doing

You can only learn so much in a classroom. GIC provides the perfect opportunity to learn about sustainability by going out in the real world, with real issues and making a real impact.

As a GIC Volunteer, you’ll conduct energy assessments for local businesses in your community to help them find ways to save energy. After you complete our training, you’ll use our self-training tool, called GEMS, to answer simple yes/no questions about the business and how they use energy. As questions are answered, GEMS automatically compiles a report for the business providing recommendations to save energy. On average, the whole thing takes about 20 minutes and identifies 20% in energy savings.
